Download links can easily get abused by bots and scripts and other visitors that you don't want.
Luckily there are ways to reduce this issue significantly.
Google has a free script called reCAPTCHA that you can easily add to your site. This script will prevent abuse from bots/scripts while still allowing your legitimate visitors to get what they need. They even have a version that is invisible so that your visitors don't even have to type or click anything.

Once you have signed up above, you can manually install Google ReCAPTCHA to your download links. Alternatively, if you have a WordPress site, it is very easy to simply install a plugin that will apply reCAPTCHA for you. Here are two of several solutions out there:
